Networking on the basis of OPC UA

AG AM in the VDMA as a platform for the uniform networking of the additive process chain

Wednesday, 27. May 2020,
10.00 -12.00 hours

we would like to start the discussion about OPC UA as a basis for the communication of AM process chains with you as a manufacturer of AM systems, their peripherals and also research center. You are cordially invited to participate and we kindly ask you to register with the adjoining link.

We will send you the dial-in details shortly before the meeting.

Agenda for the online conference:

  1. Presentation of OPC UA by the VDMA expert (Mr. Faath)
  2. Do the participants see a need to develop a tool for AM machine networking based on OPC UA?
  3. Is AG AM seen as a suitable platform to develop an OPC UA Companion Spec?
  4. Who else should participate?
  5. Further procedure

For further explanation:

In the working group Automation AM, the networking of machines has been discussed. In order to standardize machine-to-machine communication, the VDMA, through its members, sees the uniform communication standard OPC UA as the preferred standard. OPC stands for Open Platform Communications, UA for Unified Architecture. With OPC UA, sensors, components, machines and controls from different manufacturers can be networked across hierarchies. Further information see also HERE
The technical characteristics of products to be standardized in OPC UA are concrete device and capability information. These are described by object-oriented information models in technical specifications, the OPC UA Companion Specifications. In this way a enables open interoperability between machines and software systems, from the shop floor to the cloud Umati (universal machine technology interface) is the name of such a spec e.g. for machine tools and also for plastics machines and is ideally worked out directly for an entire industry.

We would like to discuss with you how we want to deal with this topic in the future in the field of the additive manufacturing industry. The aim is to clarify which machine types can be particularly relevant for the topic of OPC UA and whether there are already initiatives on the topic of OPC UA in your company.
